Commemorating 1 Year of Figure Collecting

26 Dec

I thought up of seven different titles I’d like to mention, so here we go!

1. Year’s Holy Grail (2012) (obtained)
I guess I wouldn’t consider any of my picks to be a grail because I didn’t actually have the need to earnestly sought after any figures I wanted this year–they were quite easily available, or at least to me. But either way, I shall present the Title of Year’s Holy Grail (2012) to… FREEing’s Kasugano Sora, Gym Suit version.

Image not mine.

She was on my priority list for a month or two until I finally scored her from Mandarake. It wasn’t an immediate discovered-and-bought kind of thing though, I waited for about two weeks before I finally gave it. The only place with hope during my search in the beginning was at Plamoya where she is ridiculously overpriced. Obviously, being a mere average high school student, that price was out of my reach. I discovered another one on Mandarake after awhile. It was still overpriced to me but definitely a whole lot (and by a whole lot, I mean really, really a lot) cheaper than Plamoya’s, so the anxiety that I might not find another one of this price again got me. In the end, I attained her successfully.

2. Year’s Favorite (2012)
It is really difficult to pick who to give this title to, I swear. Each and every figure has their own strengths and weaknesses and I enjoy them all to their fullest potential in many different ways that it’s hard to compare. To make everything easier, I factor in things like aesthetic (which is actually a big disadvantage to many prize figures I own), level of enjoyment, and many other things to consider about a figure, put them together, and rounded up a score. So, without further ado, I present the Title of Year’s Favorite (2012) to… Alter’s Kasugano Sora.

Image not mine.

I swear being bias to my waifu doesn’t play a big part in deciding this spot (which should actually, because ‘favorite’ is personal preference after all) and is more on the quality instead. Many collectors say Alter’s figures’ quality is top-notch and I concur–it really is. Following really closely behind to earn my pick for this title is Megahouse’s Gon Freecss. It may just be a mere trading figure but I assure you he looks better live than he does in those photos, honestly.

3. Year’s Regret (2012)
You know it, right? Impulse buying? It happens, and will turn either for the better or the worse. For this title, I’ll talk about the worse (regrets). I have two picks, both of which are referring to a group and not just one figure, mainly, Chara-Ani’s Durarara!! trading figures or the two Touhou nendoroids, Sakuya and Flandre. I like them, I really do. Durarara!!’s one of my favorite shows and both Sakuya and Flandre are my favorites from Touhou, but what make them regrettable for me is that they were an impulse buy and I didn’t intend for a collection of them in the first place. It’s because of that that I don’t display them because they’re too small in size (referring to figure size and/or collection size) that they don’t fit in with the rest of my collection, which is a shame. Although I mentioned two groups, I’ll give the Title of Year’s Regret (2012) to… Chara-Ani’s Durarara!! trading figures.

Image not mine.

I honestly like Durarara!!’s characters more than Touhou’s but the Touhou nendoroids provide me with more fun with exchangeable parts for the other nendoroids at the least whereas the former mentioned doesn’t.

4. Year’s Most Valued (2012)
By ‘most valued’ I mean the figure(s) that holds the strongest sentimental value, and I can easily present the Title of Year’s Most Valued (2012) to… Mashiro and Takagi nendoroids.

Image not mine.

For the simple reason that they arrived together, are my very first nendoroids, and the ones who begun my journey of collecting. I’m always overwhelmed by nostalgia whenever I look at them, especially at their boxes with them packed neatly inside. It is a very refreshing and cheery feeling because I get reminded of how excited I was when I first held them in my hands. They hold dear to my heart.

5.Year’s Unexpected (2012)
This title is meant for figure(s) I thought of wanting, felt as almost impossible to obtain, but managed to get anyway out of luck and not hard work. I give the Title of Year’s Unexpected (2012) to… Popy’s HUNTERxHUNTER Anime Heroes Mini Big Head trading figures.

Image not mine.

Because I only started collecting recently, I missed out all the older figures of HUNTERxHUNTER which have proved rather difficult to find. When I first came across pictures of these mini figures, I honestly thought they looked slightly weird so I’m alright with not having them, but they did not leave my mind. When I was doing my daily routine of checking Mandarake one day, I came across this set late at night and after a few minutes of serious pondering, I snatched them off the list. You can consider this an impulse buy, but this is one that turned for the better because I now think they look strangely lovely. Following really closely behind to obtain this title is Banpresto Ichiban Kuji’s HUNTERxHUNTER Hisoka prize figure. I scored him off Mandarake as well–lucky.

6. Year’s Most Expensive (2012)
The title itself is pretty self-explanatory so without ado, I present the Title of Year’s Most Expensive to… FREEing’s Kasugano Sora, Gym Suit version, which had already won the Title of Year’s Holy Grail (2012) before this. One’s holy grail doesn’t mean it’ll turn out to be the most expensive, but this year it happened to be it for me, with the price costing over S$300 (shipping fee included).

7. Year’s Cheapest (2012)
Again, self-explanatory title, but I won’t count gifts (they’re technically free) and will count figures that I bought/count as a set a set. I now present the Title of Year’s Cheapest (2012) to… Bandai’s HUNTERxHUNTER Killua Candy Toy trading figure.

Image not mine.

I got him at a price of S$13 at AFA this year, if you can recall. If you think it’s not practical that I counted him though, then I would say the cheapest figures I got for this year are Banpresto’s HUNTERxHUNTER DXF, Volume 2 (Killua and Leorio).

Image not mine.

I got them as a set for an estimate of S$31.18.

And that was all of the titles. I’m almost reaching the end of this post as well.

Before even going to my 2013 wishlist, I already have a lot of pre-orders scheduled for release next year, haha. I do have a couple of Gintama and HUNTERxHUNTER figures on my wishlist for 2013! But what I really look forward most to now is 2013’s Snow Miku! She’s looking really beautiful in all those photos on MFC! Are you planning to get her as well?

            December 28, 2012 at 11:13 PM

I actually got the doll for ¥10200 instead of the retail price because Hobby Search had a discount! Can’t deny that it’s still expensive though, but I’m getting my next salary soon so it’s alright, hehe.

I doubt there’ll be nendoroids of the characters from HxH (Chibi-Arts might more likely to pick them up though), but if there really are, they’re be so adorable! I’ll definitely get my hands on them no matter what the cost! (*´Д`*)

Oh! I love Miku but I keep thinking of Rin wearing the Yukata instead (which I have seen, in MFC, and she looked so cute) because I just like Rin so much more, haha. Either way, your VOCALOID collection is slowly growing into a really nice one!

            http://myfigurecollection.net/item/100381

uumm i don't know too, maybe GSC don't get the licence..?
yes, if become nendoroid, i'm sure it will cute plus i love to change their face with the other characters

            *laugh* me too
how much i love miku but still all my attention for kagamine rin and len
about yukata, yah.. i'm really want GSC make nendoroid yukata rin or kimono rin. She will look cute with her ribbon too
idea come up with snow miku, i want change her head with rin ^^

Thank you~ and you too, i looked your collection become more and more

According to Hobby Search, they are currently preparing to ship her–I’m so excited!

It can’t be help that the price is so high because she’s so much larger than the regular ones! She really is very pretty, too. Dollfies’ prices though, are so much more terrifying, haha.

Oh, yeah, I read something in the community regarding the license as well, but it was referring to One Piece instead. Even if it’s not about the license though, I find HxH’s characters just doesn’t seem to belong in GSC, you know? GSC seems to go for the more popular or cutesy kind of characters.

When your Kagamine collection grows more in the future, I bet it’ll look fantastic if you have everything placed together, including the albums!

            wow that’s a good news
btw how shipping a doll like that to your country…?
since our country really near each other i guess the shipping price won’t be so much different ^^!

            really….? i don’t really notice that..
ah yah mostly GSC only made cute characters or popular anime series =x=!
geezz i wonder if gsc want make masaki mei nendo…?

            yah, i think so too…
well if i can collect most of them, i bet my room will full of yellow XD
            will try my best~
it’s strange how my personality can change cause stuck with my favorite character ^^!

p.s : oh yah remember about snow miku 2013…?
if compare snow miku 2013 with sakura miku which one better…? I may hunting 1 miku again ^^

            January 1, 2013 at 11:47 AM

I still haven’t been notified of the shipping cost yet but when I do, I’ll tell you about it!

There’s a Chibi-Arts of Mei already in the works though! She very much resembles a nendoroid. To me, it seems unlikely that GSC will make one for her when there’s already a Chibi-Arts, but we’ll never know!

I would personally choose Snow Miku 2013. Sakura Miku’s really cute and pretty but Snow Miku 2013 feels a lot more unique. In default, she doesn’t look like the typical Miku, which is great, but there’s also the option with her twintails, which is even better! Another thing is that Snow Miku 2013’s outfit is quite general, so other nendoroids (for example, Rin, hehe) can look good in it too. The only thing would be that Snow Miku 2013’s definitely going to be much more expensive than Sakura Miku, so you might have to consider on that.

            okay :D
            i will wait your info…

i saw from mfc about chibi arts mei
            this one right..?
            http://myfigurecollection.net/item/129301
don’t know why i don’t feel satisfied with chibi arts ( i’m more like nendoroid fans ^^!). Hope GSC will make her soon

            thanks for the advice ^^
i’m really confused between sakura miku and snow miku 2013
as your said sakura miku really cute plus her expression GSC offered really nice too * sadly i’m not a fans of pink color so it just look strange =x=*
and snow miku…i have no word for her, she is unique and beautiful too.
I will try hunting snow miku 2013 if the price less than $90 with shipping.
I hope this time GSC won’t make a mess for this miku….

Yup, it’s that. Me too. I have one Chibi-Arts and it doesn’t tempt me to get another. I think it’s the big gap between the size of their heads and their bodies that makes them feel so fragile, unlike nendoroids, where their bodies are much chubbier to fit their big heads so the quality of theirs feel better.

Perhaps the pink GSC used for Sakura Miku is a bit too bright and striking that makes the whole Miku look… strange?

I believe Snow Miku 2012’s incident was just an unfortunate mishap. They should be more careful now. I can’t wait to see which Miku you’ll end up getting!

            January 3, 2013 at 1:37 PM

yah i looked chibi-arts can’t count as chibi * it not cute at all*
maybe the prefect chibi size is nendoroid. the face and body really match and count as cute X3

if much brightness i think yes…?
well i’m really curious with sakura miku without photoshop editing or too much lightning effect

i hope too, last year GSC made so many mess product and less quality control
really hope it change in 2013 >x<
i think i will stick with snow miku 2013, the kimono and hair just too beautiful
need prepare on feb *i bet many fans will be do the same ^^*

Oh, no. She’s not that heavy at all since she’s quite small actually. I guess around the weight of two to three nendoroids piled up, maybe?

I just remembered we had a similar conversation like this back in my Takagi nendoroid review, haha. It’s really unfortunate that their prices are still so high after so long; I’d really love to see some photographs of them by you.

I really love to take some pictures of them with Miho. I think it’d be cool :)

I see a new quest ahead, and that is to visit your blog! And thanks for linking my page! I’ll get you a place on my blogroll as soon as possible.
